Hot or not? The most popular posts on 501 Places

I’m going to be travelling for a few weeks and am not expecting to be adding to this site while I’m away (too busy having a good time I hope). So in the absence of regular updates I thought I’d share the most ‘successful’ 501 Places posts of the last year or so, based on three different criteria.

Thanks for all who’ve read and commented on the many posts on this site, and I hope to be back soon with a whole bunch of new stories, adventures and dubious opinions to share with you. Hasta luego!

Three most popular posts (according to Google Analytics and web host stats)

1. New York City – a world of food My favourite eating spots in NYC (based on year spent there in 2003/04)

2. 12 Hidden Faces of London A photo post

3. Alternative Travel Quotes for the Modern World A twist on some well-known quotations.

Three most posts with most comments

1. 10 reasons why travel is a waste of time – questioning the real value of travel

2. Are travel bloggers looking in the wrong place for their pot of gold? – how bloggers can make a business out of their efforts

3. Too afraid to travel? Are our fears killing off the next generation of backpackers? – looking at the consequences of parents’ over-protective behaviour.

My three favourite posts

1. Sarajevo, Mostar and the legacy of the Bosnian war – my reflections from our trip to the Balkans and the scene of a tragic conflict. It’s a part of the world that made a big impact on me, something I tried to convey in this post.

2. Walking the London Monopoly Board – probably the most fun I’ve had researching a blog post.

3. How to safely cross a field of cows – not a masterpiece by any measure, but a reminder of one the biggest pleasures I get from blogging: the freedom to write about ANYTHING that takes my fancy.
