2011 culinary highlights

What better way to summarise a year of travel than with a few poorly collated photographs? I hope that some of these make you hungry (I’m fairly sure that quite a few of them won’t)

Oaxacan food

Dinner in Oaxaca. It's almost a year ago and I have no recollection about this dish. Even the olives don't provide much of a clue. Was it dessert? Probably not. I'm sure it was nice, otherwise I wouldn't have taken a photo

Full English Breakfast

I spent 68 nights in hotels during 2011 - most were outside the UK so my arteries were spared the damage that a regular diet of this British masterpiece would have caused

Carnivore heaven

Carnivore heaven in Oviedo, northern Spain. I was here to attend a tourism conference and as part of the kind Asturian hospitality we received I was treated to this delicious assault on the heart

Sachertorte

In May, the Austrian Tourist Office sent me to Austria to report on their Hidden Treasures. I found this and considered it a legitimate expense as you can now see just how delicious Austrian cakes really are

Seagull

While walking on the Dorset coast we stopped at a cafe and kept a close eye on our neighbouring diner. Two cups of tea would no doubt leave their mark soon afterwards

Japanese sushi

We were lucky enough to enjoy a whole month in Japan and indulged in several sushi nights, causing utter chaos for the non-English speaking staff on every occasion

Pasteis de nata

A first visit to Portugal in April and an introduction to these national treasures. They don't look like much but they rank right up there with the world's best cakes

Tsukiji Fish Market Tokyo

For those used to seeing their fish nicely presented or even served out of a tin, a visit to Tokyo's Tsukiji Fish Market is quite an eye-opener. This was far from being the biggest catch of the day

Cakes

Ultimately this year will be remembered as one where I ate locally baked cakes in 10 different countries, thus doing my bit to support the global economy in difficult times

  3. Fun roundup and good god that plate of meat looks incredible! Not sure if you saw this great long piece from VF about the market in Tokyo, but if not I thought you might enjoy: http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2007/06/sushi200706

    • Thanks for the useful link Jodi and the kind words. Yes, the meat was not just for me (although there was so much to go around I could have easily eaten this lot myself and then helped others too).

    Hello Andy,

Will you please stop thinking about the health of your arteries and wallop the lot of fatty food just like the rest of us?

Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year!

    Best wishes and warmest regards,
    Guan.

    • That’s the plan Guan – the whole healthy eating concern thing is just a pointless act to appease my conscience while I do indeed wallop down the best dishes I can find. Merry Christmas to you and yours too :-)
