Sure, it has its set of issues, like many places, but I found the people to be very friendly and food delicious (nothing beats street tacos!). There are tons of things to see and do there, including boat rides in Xochimilco.

The people are friendly, the architecture is stunning, the history is expansive and the food scene is beyond this world. This is a fabulous world class city.

But this is one huge slum of a city.
I was afraid to go out at night,
and I got terribly sick when I ate a hamburger at a restaurant/puesto.

Your article definitely gave me some more Aztec ruins and churches to explore.

I was so scared before going too – but it seems the media completely blew things out of proportion regarding violence etc. Loved Fida Kahlo’s house and Coyoacan…there’s a great historical fiction novel called “The Lacuna” by Barbara Kingsolver set during Frida and Diego’s heyday in Mexico city – would really recommend a readof this too:)

I was only there a week and that just wasn’t enough time to see everything I wanted to see. I saved my last day for the Chapultepec museum, and it was closed! But I’ll never forget Teotihuacan. Just as I got to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun, one of those hawkers down below started playing one of the pottery flutes he was selling. It was all you could hear up there, and it was mystical — as in raise the hair on the back of your neck!
