Walking on Gozo, Malta

Small enough to walk around the entire coast in a couple of days, Gozo is the small sibling of Malta, only half an hour away by ferry. Busy along the main street that bisects the island, away from this the island is like a nature reserve – left to their own devices, the plants grow wild and the tracks are not maintained.

We enjoyed wandering round this pretty little island. One day gave us the chance to see a lot, though not all, of the corners of the island, even with a car at our disposal. After a two hour trek along the southern shore of the island, we feasted on a memorable seafood lunch, washed down by copious portions of Sicilian ice cream (it’s little over an hour by hydrofoil to Sicily from here). We were here in March, so the crowds were not overwhelming. I can imagine that in the height of the summer the tiny island’s resources must be stretched to bursting point to cater for the many day trippers from the major Maltese resorts.

Gozo is well worth going to for a hiking break, particularly as it is getting easier to reach Malta these days (next time I will choose Easyjet ahead of Air Malta – a real disappointment of a national airline and not a good introduction to Maltese service). Take the time to walk around the island’s coastline, and you will feel you are somewhere far more remote than you really are.
